Words Are Like an Arrow

Words have power and that power is in our hands.

We all use words, and I use them on my blog almost every day.

We should never underestimate the power of words, words can build and heal but words can also destroy.

Countless careers, friendships and marriages were destroyed by just a few hurtful words.

In the army long ago when I was exhausted by a 24 hours march without sleeping a few words from my sergeant gave me my strength back…

On the other hand a word of encouragement can bring life back to a broken man.

That’s the reason why the power of speech that we have should be used with caution.

If we use the power of speech with wisdom, we can not only improve our own life but also the life of people around us.

Jewish tradition warns not to speak too much, and to speak badly about others is considered a sin.

In Judaism the harm done by speech is even worse than the harm done by stealing : money lost can be repaid, but the harm done by speech can never be repaired.

Speech is even considered as an arrow, once the words are released, like an arrow, they can’t be taken back and can destroy as much.

We saw many times politicians or celebrities ruining their career with words badly chosen.

So better to keep quiet than to use nonsensical words.

When a person doesn’t speak much, everytime he will speak people will respectfully listen to him.

He will have more authority.

The reason is that words have much more power when they are rare.

So we should all be extremely careful in the words we use and try to use them to encourage and improve and not to destroy and hurt.

The choice is ours.
